Music that matters Such Hawks, Such Hounds explores the American hard-rock undergroundAaron Graham Such Hawks, Such Hounds explores hard rock from the '70s to the '90s. But like all rock docs, the incidentals prove to be considerable: names of bands and choice snippets of music rush forth so fast that, unless you're a dedicated fan, you'll be scribbling down song titles so you can check them out later. Directed by John Srebalus, the doc coasts through well-known bands such as The Melvins and Black Flag, in order to dig deeper into more obscure acts. Lengthy performances captured specifically for this production showcase what the groups have to offer, while the members of bands such as Fatso Jetson, High on Fire and Nebula explain the history of the genre's music and what it means to them. Bringing the screening to the Lo Pub is local events organizer Kier-La Janisse, who says she discovered Such Hawks, Such Hounds at filmmaker Allison Anders' Don't Knock The Rock Film and Music Festival. "My initial draw was, after seeing the reviews, that the film covers Pentagram. Pentagram's from Maryland and was active during the early-to-mid-'70s; and they're kind of like Black Sabbath, but influenced by the heavy psych sound of Blue Cheer. "The thing is, nobody had ever heard of them - unless you were from Maryland - up until about five years ago when their CDs were reissued. They're a legendary band now because of it. "The draw of those early '70s bands was too much to ignore," Janisse continues. "As I work in a record store, I know that bands like Earthless and Sun have their younger fans, so bringing it to Winnipeg sounded like a good idea. "The documentary really charts the development from heavy psych to metal in the '80s, and how it's all come back again full circle. The weaving of the different traditions really impressed me, combined with the low-tone, droning groups that don't have a lot of information elsewhere." Before the feature, local act The Electric Candles will perform. Tickets are $6 and an extra $4 will get you a combination ticket for both the screening and The Sex Negatives gig at the Albert.
